Confusion over the rebasing of GDP

 According to the new GDP series, GDP growth for Q1-2012 and Q2-2012 came in at very high levels of 16.1% and 9.2% respectively, pushing up the overall growth rate for the year to 9.1%. The GDP growth for 2013 slowed down significantly to 3.4% and, 4.5% in 2014. The volatility in the new growth figures have caused confusion and distorted Sri Lanka’s growth projections. While there have come few more clarification from DCS, we need more clarity to correctly estimate GDP growth.

Divergence in the economic story based on the two series: The previous series indicated that the economy was slowing down while the new series indicates that the economy was accelerating in H2-2014. 

Our current forecast is based on the assumption that the new series will replicate the growth trajectory of the old series. But it seems that the new series is projecting a different economic growth trajectory

High volatility in the new series: A look at the Q1 y/y growth data over the last 4 years indicate the huge variances in the new series. It is likely that going ahead we might have a few more quarters of volatile growth in the GDP before it stabilises.

GDP price deflator: This also shows similar variability. While the GDP deflator was under-estimated for  2012; it was over-estimated for 2013 and 2014.

Structure of the economy has changed: In the old series, agricultural, industrial and services activities contributed 13.3%, 32.6% and 54.1% to the GDP at current prices for the first quarter of 2015. The contribution of agricultural and industrial activities decreased to 7.8% and 28.7% respectively and for services activities increased up to 56.5% in the new series representing the trend towards services dominant economy. Historical contributions too have changes with contribution of agriculture going down significantly in the new series. 

And now Sri Lanka is on the road to de-stabilization since the U.S. engineered a 'regime change':

The U.S. wanted the ouster of Rajapaksa because of its orientation to China which was an obstacle to Obama's Asia Pivot policy.

Those who worked very closely with American foreign service officers (FSOs) from the eighties through the turn of the millennium were aware that the United States never wanted the secessionist Tamil Tiger movement totally annihilated; it wanted it to be a 'pressure group' to check the Sinhalese chauvinistic tendencies of Sri Lanka, and maintain Sri Lanka within the American orbit which promotes 'US Designs' in South and East Asian region.

The Rajapaksa administration was an obstacle to American interests in the region, and 'democracy' and 'good governance' were the least the U.S. was interested.

The U.S. had a taste during the 2001-2004 era when Ranil Wickremasinghe occupied the position of premiership; his government was clearly serving the American interests; made Sri Lanka's premier international airport available for the US to implement its prisoner rendition program transporting 'enemy combatants' to CIA Black Sites for enhanced interrogation - meaning torture - when even India refused that facility to the U.S.; sided with the U.S. at Doha Round of Talks against the wishes of the developing Third World nations; tacitly approved the Norwegian-engineered Peace Treaty (CFA) with Tamil Tigers in 2002 which helped the Tigers to strengthen itself militarily for later use.

The state department maintained an unusual cohabitation with the secessionist Tamil advocates and activists to destabilize the Sri Lanka state since the defeat of the Tigers through 2014 using the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva sponsoring several resolutions.

Obviously the U.S. wanted the Rajapaksa administration out to pave the way for Ranil Wickremasinghe - not really Maitripala Sirisena - to bring Sri Lanka into the American orbit.

The country was moving forward despite certain authoritarian tendencies of the Rajapaksa regime which has since retarded due to uncertainty in the nation's governance. Instability has crept in the way following the pattern emerged in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan when regimes were changed at the behest of the United States.

It was clearly manifested that Saddam Husain and Gaddafi exercised authoritarian power in their respective nations. Nevertheless, there was domestic stability in both Iraq and Libya, and external stability in the region. We see none since the US-doctored regime changes.

It is true that the Rajapaksa regime had authoritarian tendencies but there was stability within the nation while certain cautious attitude was taken in monitoring secessionist elements within the Global Tamil Diaspora who had moved closer to foreign policy handlers in Western Capitals.

The US ignores democracy and rule of law in countries strategically important to its foreign policy objectives and national security concerns. The CIA overthrew Mossadegh's democratically-elected government in 1953 and installed the authoritarian Shah Reza Pahlavi for economic reasons. It overthrew the Indonesian regime in 1965 to install a dictator for strategic reasons.

Former Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee John Kerry in his December 2009 senate report on Sri Lanka warned the Obama administration that Sri Lanka is in a strategic location in the India Ocean for the United States to cultivate her friendship.

The calculated move to dislodge the Rajapaksa regime was in the strategic interest of the U.S. in the Indian Ocean region. But the collateral damage is felt within the perimeters of Sri Lanka.

දැන් යූඇන්පී සටන් පාඨය, ලක්ෂ 62ක ජනතාවගේ ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී අයිතියට ගරු කර, "මහින්දට නොමිනේෂන්වත් දෙන්න එපෝ.............." යන්නය. යකාගේම ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයකි. මහින්ද ඕනෑ කී ලක්ෂ 58 නොසලකා හැරීම කවර ගණයේ ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයක්දැයි ඇසිය යුතුය

මෙන්න මේ දේ හොදින් නිරීක්ෂනය කරන්න. පූර්ව ජනාධිපතිවරණ සමයේ යූඇන්පීය මැතිරුවේ "අරූ හොරා, මූ හොරා, මුන් අතනින් ගැහුවා, මුන් මෙතනින් ගැහුවා, මේ හොටලේ මහින්දගේ කෝකියගේ, අර රෙස්ටෝරන්ට් එක හදන්නේ නාමල්...." වැනි මන්ත්‍රය. ජනාධිපතිවරණය අවසානයේ මාස 6ක් පමණ අපි "හොරු අල්ලනවෝ හොරු අල්ලනවෝ" චිත්‍රපටය නැරඹුවෙමු. දැන් මහමැතිවණයට පෙර, එම හොරු පිළිබඳ බ්‍රෑන්ඩ් මාකටිං කිරීම, 'හොරුන්ට නාමයෝජනා එපෝ....' කියන තැනට ස්ථානගත කර ඇත(Brand positioning).

එහෙත් මාස 7කට කිට්ටු කාලයක් පසුවී අවසාන වුවත්, අල්ලපු හොරෙක් නැති. බිලියන් ගණන් හොරා කෑ කී බැසිල් පවා ඇතුලට දැම්මේ ප්‍රතිපත්තිමය වශයෙන් ගත් තීන්දුවක් වැරදී කියමින්ය, එහෙත් අධිකරණය එය නිවරැදි නොවන බව පවසමින් බැසිල්ට ඇප දුන්නේය. සරණ ගුණවර්ධන, ජොන්ස්ටන් හිරේ බලා ආවෝය, ඔප්පු කල හැකි සාක්ෂියක් නොවීය. හොර එතනෝල්කාරයා ලෙස හංවඩු ගැසූ ජොනී ඇතුලට ගියේ සතොසෙන් ණයට බඩු අරන් පීඩාවට පත් ජනතාවට දුන් නිසාය. මහජන මුදල් ගසා කා ගුවන් යානා හිමිකරුවකු වූවා යැයි හංවඩු ගැසූ සජින් වාස් ඇතුලට දමන විට ගුවන් යානා ගැන වචනයක් වත් නොඇසූ බව පැහැදිලිය.

තවත් එක මාකටිං උගුලක පැටලීමට පෙර, යූඇන්පීය ඔබේ මනස සමඟ සෙල්ලම් කරන හැටි දැනගන්න. ජනාධිපතිවරණෙට පෙර හොරා හොරා මාකට් කලේය. එහෙත් කිසිදු හොරෙකු අල්ලා නැතිමුත් තවමත් 'හොරා හොරා' 'හොර නඩය' 'දුෂිත පාලනය' යන වචන යූඇන්පී මන්ත්‍රීවරුන්ගේ කටේ කොච්චර සුලභදැයි නිකමට සිතා බලන්න හරීන් ප්‍රනාන්දු කට ඇරියොත් ඔය හොරා යන වචනය කොපමණ භාවිතා කරනවා දැයි ඊළඟ වතාවේ හොඳින් නිරීක්ෂණය කරන්න. හරීන් එම වචනය දිගට හරහට යොදාගත්තද, එම අවස්ථාවක කවුරුහෝ "හොරු කියන්නේ ඇයි? කෝ සාක්ෂි දෙන්න" කියා ඇසුවොත්, ඔහුට තර්කානුකූල සාධනීය පිලිතුරක් ලබාදීමය හැකි වන්නේ නැත. එය කැට තබා කිව හැකිය. ඔවුන්ට මේ රටේ වැඩක් කර බලය ගැනීම සිහිනයක් වන නිසා ඔවුන් කරන්නේ වැඩ කරන මිනිසා හොරා කියා හංවඩු ගැසීමය. හොරා යන වචනය තව තවත් සමාජගත කිරීමය. මහමැතිවරණයට පෙර දැන් මාකට් කරන්නේ, ජනතාවගේ ඔලුවට දමන්නේ, හොරුන්ට දූෂිතයින්ට ඡන්දය දෙන්න එපා, මහින්ද ඇතුළු නඩය යළි එන්නේ හොරුන් ආරක්ෂා කිරීමට කියමින්ය. ඔවුන් ඇත්තටම හොරුනම්, මේ දින 100 නොව දින 150ක් ගත වෙලත් යහපාලන ආණ්ඩුව ඔවුනට දඬුවම් නොදී සිටී යැයි ඔබ විහිළුවටවත් සිතනවාද? කිසිසේත් නැත.

Hello Sri Lankan professionals!

Why have you kicked out progress made over the last 5 years? Do you still think you made the right choice?

All nationalistic leaders have suffered dearly at the hands of the West. As they do not want domestic economic solutions apart from their liberal economic policies. Do wake up ...its not too late to undo what you have done.

Leadership is a lonely job

Sri Lanka has seen it's share of bad leaders over the 67 years of independence. Many who ruled in the 1990's convinced the country that defeating terrorism is not a valid proposition and that federal government is the best way for a country like ours. We too were convinced that this ideology was just and a way forward.

In 2005 came a man and a leader who had other plans. He said that the terrorist can be defeated and an unitary country the way forward. He also mentioned that the country will have only two kinds of people those who love the country and those who don't. This was Mahinda's vision. In 2009 he abolished terrorism from this land and gave us back the freedom to live without fear of being blown up. In a short period of 5 years he developed the country and made it among the fastest growing countries in the world. He gave the country respect and to pride ourselves as Sri Lankan's. This journey was marked by extraordinary and unparalleled leadership.

Sadly such leadership is not welcome by the US and UK. They together with the non nationalistic forces moved to destroy the image of leadership by calling it dictatorship and other such names. Once Again We Like With our belief in the inability to defeat terrorism succumbed to this untruth. The strongest leader of our times the leader who showed that the job at hand is mind over matter was betrayed. Sri Lanka lost its won war on that day. The war against lack luster economic growth was partly addressed and the job of making Sri Lanka a great nation was buried with the loss of its strong leader.

Leadership is all about making tough decisions making a choice between action and inaction. Some come right some go wrong. But that decision requires courage and conviction. Nothing is possible without such a vision for success and thinking big. Leadership is lonely and at times thankless!

If Sri Lanka is to be among the industrialised countries then Sri Lanka cannot be adopting western growth models nor can it subordinate itself to the desires of western interest. Sri Lanka is unique and must have home grown development models with home grown skills and knowledge harnessed and incorporated that journey. This is what leadership is all about. Tapping in to the local resources and believing in the ability to get the job done. MAHINDA has done so with the defeating terrorism and was doing it with the economy. This was termed dictatorship and fascist by the West and those who wanted subordination.

Today we have let ourselves and our country down by buying into this western indoctrination. We have destroyed what was built we have destroyed strong leadership.

Rise Sri Lanka don't be fooled by those who don't love Sri Lanka! ! Be brave enough to bring back strong leadership and a visionary ! MAHINDA IS THE ONLY WAY FORWARD!

Let me understand the Logic of Failure

Ranil and UNP contested 30 times and they all failed to win a single mandate. Ranil also contested 3 Presidential Elections, 2005, 2010 and 2015 and did not win a mandate. In 2010 and in 2015 he used two non-UNP candidates to muster a win. In 2010 that plan failed miserably. In 2015 he did so again, this time too the fear of failure gripped Ranil and the UNP so badly that they had no leaders themselves so decided to outsource this task as they did with the Colombo Municipality Elections in 2011.

Ironically the so called candidate won, and Ranil and UNP came through the back door into government. This according many legal experts is illegal (see Sarath N Silva, 2015 ).

However, Mahinda has won all 29 elections, including 2 Presidential Elections. Losing only in 2015. According to the UNP Mahinda is a rejected currency (as per Kabir). If that is the case, then what would Ranil and the UNP who were rejected 30 times be called? "Asia's Biggest Joke" for a party or "Dumb and dumber"! Or better still, "Cowards of Asia"? Or the "Biggest LOSER Asia" !
